Historic Happenings: Somerville Calendar '11
Meetings are generally held the first Thursday of the month. Contact us at 617-625-5809 or info@historicsomerville.org for details. All meetings are held at the Somerville Museum from 7:00-9:00 PM. The Museum is located at One Westwood Road, Somerville, MA 02143. Everyone is welcome. You do not have to be a member to attend.
Lectures are $5 for members, $8 for nonmembers, $5 for students and seniors.
EVENTS for 2011:
- January 1, 2011, 11:30am; meet at City Hall, walk to Prospect Hill for the program;
12:00 noon, at Prospect Hill park: The 235th Flag Raising Ceremony. Come
in your warmest, Colonial best if you like. Contact Brandon Wilson of the
Somerville Historic Preservation Commission to receive a loan of period clothing at
bwilson@ci.somerville.ma.us.
- March 3rd, 7:00-9:00 PM, The Trains of Somerville: Part I, John Roderick, well-known and
well-regarded local train buff will speak on his passion, the train systems throughout the
Northeast with special emphasis on the role of Somerville trains.
- April 18th, 10:00-11:30 AM, Patriot's Day Fair at Foss Park! Greet Paul Revere as he makes
his way through Somerville onto Lexington and Concord. Play historic games and win
a prize: Come in your 1775 costume if you like or we’ll provide you with one! Contact

June 5th, time TBD Jenny Alder Graves and the Creation of the Ginny Doll. From the
establishment of Ye Olde Vogue Doll Shoppe in her home in Somerville in 1922 to a
company with sales of $5 million dollars in 1957, the story of the Ginny doll is one of
innovation, and excellence. This lecture will complement the exhibition of Ginny Dolls
that will be held at the Somerville Museum from May through June.

Prospect Hill in the American Revolution, Lawrence A. Willwerth, Quartermaster,
Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts

October 22nd, no raindate, 4:00-6:00 PM. The Ghosts of Somerville Open Cemetery: A unique
experience of Somerville’s 1804 Milk Row Cemetery; auditions for cast members will

The Somerville Garden Club

December 9th, 7:00-9:00 PM, Holiday Party, Suggested donation: $25/person; free for members,
supporters, volunteers and a guest. Those donating $25 will receive a yearly membership
